Most race horses are on the track racing as 2 year olds. In some cases, with breeds like the QH, it's not uncommon (that doesn't make it right) to find 3 year olds fully trained and polished. Some horses (think Lipizzaners, other baroque breeds, some warmbloods) aren't even backed until they are five because of how long it takes them to develop.
